Before you choose

What to compare in a hardwood floor

  • Solid or engineered

Solid boards are one piece of wood. Engineered boards have a real wood top layer over a layered core, which handles humidity changes better.

  • Species and grade

Oak, hickory and maple wear and look different. The grade decides how much natural character, like knots and color variation, you’ll see.

  • Finish and refinishing

Prefinished boards arrive ready to walk on. Site-finished floors are sanded and sealed at your home. Check how many times a floor can be refinished.

Common questions

Hardwood questions

Still have a question? Call us at (804) 512-0615 or see all FAQs.

Which hardwood brand is best?

There isn’t one best brand. The right floor depends on the room, how much humidity it sees, the look you want and your budget. We can compare options with you during your free estimate.

Is engineered hardwood real wood?

Yes. Engineered hardwood has a real wood top layer over a layered core. It’s often chosen where humidity changes are a concern.

Can you match my existing hardwood?

It depends on the species, board width and finish, so we look at the existing floor in person during the estimate.
